‘Indian startups could become the next Qualcomm’: CEO of India Semiconductor Mission

Since the world is tied up with the growing demand of fracture supply chains and chips, India is moving firmly in the World Semicamdor Race. The nation is hosting its most important technology conference, Semican India, 2025, at Dwarka's Yashbhomi between 2 and 4 September.

“This is very important to all of us, for our future: Being Semicon,” Amitish Kumar Sinha, Additional Secretary, CEO of Mety and India Semicader Mission, in a conversation with the founder and CEO, Shardha Sharma, Matty and CEO Your Story MediaIn the run -up, the conference.

This year, the conference has gathered more than 20,000 participants from 48 countries, including giants such as ASML, Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron, and Disco. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the program on September 2, 2025, and attended the CEO Round Table with the leaders of the companies.

Semin India saw more than 350 companies from Pavilions in the country of Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea in 2025. Six -country round tables have gathered policy makers, Indian firms and world players. Sinha added, “In fact, it became so overwhelmed like a rock concert, that we had to stop registration.”

Semin India has highlighted the scale of 2025 that Indian Prime Minister Modi has come within just four years after announcing the Indian Seminade Mission on December 15, 2021. “Since then … for these four years, we have made a lot of efforts in it, and now 10 projects have been successful,” Sinha said.

    India for the world

When India first proposed hosting the semicoon, industry body semi.

“Initially, Sammy felt that India was not enough or ready for it. Therefore, we organized ourselves first and second – in 2022 was previously in Bangalore (Bangalore), the second was in Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat in 2023.”

Until 2024, Sammy was convinced of India's pace and in partnership with the government. Since last year, India has been organizing Semicon India along with Sammy.

Sinha explained, “The semiconductor is a foundation industry. Like steel … without steel, no structure can be created. Similarly, semiconductor -toot brushes to defense equipment, satellite, space mission, medical and heavy industries are the basis of all industries.”

He further emphasized the strategic hurry, “Without self -reliance, we will be behind the strategy. Globally, countries impose sanctions because of the race to stay ahead.” Therefore, India's policy increases chemicals, gases, materials and equipment as well as design, fabrication and packaging, which contains 70 % chip price.

    Build an environmental system

“We have just started, with 10 approved projects, from fabricated to packaging from fabrics to compound semiconductor, including modern packaging. Further projects are in the pipeline.”

He also highlighted the main milestone so far: along with eight other packaging projects, from 28nm to 110nm, with micron packaging facility, and with startups in compound semiconductor in compound semiconductor with state support in Odisha and somewhere else, from 28nm to 110nm, nodes.

He added that at the educational level, the government has developed electronic design automation (EDA) tools in 280 colleges – traditionally prohibited expensive expensive. Sinha said, “Already 20 students designed chips have been fabricated and packed in our semiconductor lab at 180nm. Every two months, new designs are tapped and packaged.”

India is also bent over the benefit of its design. “… 20 % of global design engineers are Indian, working in big companies. The easiest part is design, and our people are worthy.

The government has approved 23 startups under the chips to startup program, while 72 more are supported. It covers 50 % of the costs from conceptual evidence to the final stage with the concessions associated with production (PLIS) on commercial sales.

    'Lagan' moment for India

Despite the buzz, Sinha is cautious. He said, “The semiconductor mission is not a T20 match, it is a marathon… (a) 10, 20, 30 -year travel.” He called it a crucial turn: “As Sir Sir said, we are in A 'Trunk Moment. 'Taiwan began in the 1960s. We started late but firmly. “

He pointed out that while India has achieved capabilities from 180NM to 28nm, the next Frontier will need perseverance. For Sinha, who worked in Mety as a joint secretary before returning as an additional secretary, progress seems to be personal.

He said, “Earlier efforts have failed, but this time, the government has formulated a comprehensive policy. It is deeply satisfactory to see new suggestions for targeting new areas and appearing companies that India is ready. Unless this mission 'India Sammy' is complete, we will not rest.
