“You advised me last year, which changed my life. I will always be grateful.” This comment came from the founder of a very successful organization that was just getting ready to go publicly. I (MG) had no idea what specific advice he was referring to.
He continued, “I was restless and sometimes sad. I was afraid that I was' not living a well -balanced life.” I was working hard but I was not spending much time with my family, my friends and my charities as I felt myself guilty and a little ashamed.
“You said, 'This is a special time in your life. You have a lifetime opportunity. Go for it! Just because you will put in many hours in the next two years, it does not mean that you have to continue your whole life. You are young. You will help you many years.” You will help you with the help of you.
Let's be a crime
We have seen the same trend in many different settings. I have seen (kilograms) Young PhD. Students have only one existential crisis, as they worked on their articles, and Assistant Professors go through the same drama, as they were approaching to get a period of employment. I try to convince them that this level of pressure will not last forever. Now “get the ball on the line”.
We give the authors the same suggestions that are publishing their first book: “This is.” This is. You will never need to write another first book that you get highlights of what you have learned in your life. After the book is published, if you want to succeed, be ready to pay your price. It will be worth the effort.
Living a balanced life does not mean that every year will be a balanced year. A great friend of ours was an investment banker for 10 years and then became the CEO of a non -profit and worked for free. Others were in non -profit, army or public service and later made money. That's fine
This is the case for health and family relations. A CEO noted that he had abandoned his career for a year to stay with his dead mother. He did not regret his decision for a minute. Another leader said he had a serious health problem and went on leave for six months to focus on self -care. Thankfully, he was recovered and now he is back to work. Neither he nor his family regrets his decision.
Share your story
As a leader, this is a great message to share with your direct reports. There are times when they, like you, need to sacrifice. There will be times when your organization will face unique opportunities and challenges. As leaders, they cannot expect a balanced week every week.
As a person, our suggestion for you is to see in the mirror. What does a well -balanced life mean for you? No one can answer this question except you. No one else can tell you about your own purpose. No one else can tell you what will bring you long -term satisfaction and happiness.
Make peace with your decisions. Some people mean that every day needs to be a balanced day. We are not We suggest that you have a balanced life, because only you can explain it. Leave this crime about not having a balanced year.
